Who doesn’t like using emojis to express themselves? On different social media platforms, users are seen using emojis in their captions, comments, messages, or even use like reacts to express themselves better.
Every year, new emojis are added which receive notable attention from the users. In 2020, 33 new emojis were added in the latest 13.0 and 13.1 updates of Unicode Emoji. In the previous years, the most used emojis included the placard, bubble tea, and the transgender flag.
The frequently used emojis are usually a result of ongoing trends on social media platforms. Emojis are never arbitrary but are always coordinated by the Unicode Consortium for the past 26 years. In 1995, the first 76 emojis were adapted by a non-profit in the US.
As the infographic shows, in 2010, the global emoji count spiked incredibly, crossing 1000 emojis. In that year, emojis related to same-gender families and couples came into service. An anti-bullying eye emoji was available in 2014 that was used to raise awareness against bullying issues around the globe.
In 2015, the users saw a great change in the emojis i.e., the different skin-colored emojis whereas, in 2017, regional flags were added. Currently, the 2020/2021 release of new emojis includes interracial couples and non-binary options.
The new set of emojis that is expected to roll out in 2022 is expected to have pregnant man, beans, and finger hearts. With the launch of these emojis, the global emoji count would exceed 3000 and will precisely reach 3460. Though the Unicode Consortium has recommended the aforementioned emojis to be released, the final decision is still pending.
