The Bureau of Investigative Journalism shared a report that reveals that India’s demand for oxygen surged incredibly between April and May 2021. The second wave of Covid-19 increased the number of new cases in the country drastically, leaving the healthcare management and system lagging behind.
India has put its oxygen export at a halt until the country gets stabilized. Moreover, the export of Covid-19 vaccination doses has also banned in the country. Despite the increased production of oxygen, TBIJ warns of further oxygen shortages in countries with an extremely high number of new Covid-19 cases.
The second wave of this deadly virus in the region has also Nepal and Sri Lanka which are combating a massive surge in the new virus cases. Also, low vaccination rates in these countries have also increased their susceptibility to the virus.
Vietnam, on the other hand, didn’t see a huge outbreak but the increase in its previously low numbers of infection resulted in an increased demand for oxygen more than that by Sri Lanka. Malaysia has also seen a massive outbreak and increased per capita new cases which made it the country with the biggest Asian outbreak. The country was already requiring a doubled amount of oxygen supply in April, is now having more dismal in June.
The rise in the new Covid-19 outbreaks in Cambodia and Thailand resulted in the increased demand for oxygen supply to treat the affected patients.
