International Day of UN Peacekeepers is observed by the United Nations annually on 29th May. The day marks a tribute to the workers who have worked under the UN all over the years.

On May 29, 198, the first peace mission was started after a group of military workers were sent to the new state of Israel by the Security Council. Since then, more than 4000 UN peacekeepers have lost their lives on these missions.

As dangerous as these missions are, UN peacemakers work all day and night to fight against groups such as ISIS and Boko Haram. The impact of Covid-19 has also affected these operations with more than 100 people losing their lives in 2020.
Millions of men and women have served for UN peacekeeping missions since 1948 and presently there are 89,000 military personnel have been deployed in different parts of the world.

According to the infographic, Bangladesh has been the highest contributor of workers with about 6,608 peacekeepers. In second place, Rwanda sits with over 6,335 peacekeepers applied on missions.

At the current International Day of UN peacekeepers, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres gave his regard to the commitment and bravery of the peacekeepers who are helping for a better future.
